How to successfully publish an E-book

If you decide to self-publish your E-book, there are still some hurdles to actually Selling your work. Your printing costs are now zip and none, and you will have an infinite supply of product around to sell to people, but like any business, there is still some work left to do before you’ll be cashing in the profits. A sad fact of life is that anything that sells, in any shape, form, or fashion, must be Marketed. The best book in the world will sit in a basement unsold (And probably did so) without proper marketing. These days, an online publisher’s job has been reduced to pure marketing in the new publishing model, so for you to go about marketing your book by yourself, you will need to develop a secondary skillset, on top of being a writer. You’ll have to become a successful Marketer yourself. Assuming you’d like to do so, here’s what you’ll need to do a good job at it and get your product moving:

  1. A website with a great sales pitch.

  2. An online shopping-cart system that collects their email address, and of course their money as well, before it sends them their E-book.

  3. In-depth knowledge of, and experience in Search Engine Optimization, so that your website gets found by all those searching for anything that has to do with your E-Book’s subject matter.

  4. A good idea of what people will pay for your product.

  5. Knowledge of the copyright and online publishing laws, so you can ensure that your hard work is safe from being stolen.

  6. Knowledge of and connections with the best online E-Book depositories, to allow for ‘satellite sales.’

Out of all of these different skills that you’ll need to make your work profit, the hardest one to develop is #3, which is the heart and soul of website marketing. SEO isn’t just about making your website’s on-site characteristics, such as ‘keyword density’ attractive to the search engines, but instead should focus on off-site factors, like how many incoming links you have, and with which anchor text they use. If these terms are going over your head, I apologize, but there is no other name for them, and they are in fact the most important factors of all for making your website popular, and therefore making your book a success.
